The setting of the story line takes place in the 1930's where many people used the downtown area as a place to meet and greet. The downtown setting is a busy and happening place.
"On a raked level above it is the courthouse square, the Main Street and the converging streets of the town."

The story then shifts to a school room setting because of the controvesy between the theory of darwin and the beliefs of religion.

The scene shifts from a school house setting to a courthouse for the trial of darwinism v.s religious supporters.

The theory of Darwin was cleary a sore subject in the community throughout the novel Inherit The Wind. The theory of Darwin was that the creation of man came from the evolution of the monkeys or cave men.

"Man was sort of evoluted from the old world monkeys"

The controvesy of teaching students in school of how man was created put parents up in arms. If this was done it would take away from the way the students religion and the way they believe man was created.

"Gimme that old time religion, It's good enough for me!"

The school board of Hillsboro Tennessee had many disagreements over whether or not the students in the public school system should learn about Darwin's theory of the evolution of man in school. Most members felt that the teaching of this subject would take the students away from their religious views.

The problem goes to trial were Judge Farmer will hear the case of Darwinism v.s the religious believers

"I-well, it's highly unorthodox. I've never known an instance where the defense called the prosecuting attorney as a witness."

The jury, joking around a lot and they can't believe they have to listen to this trial.

"The jury's decision is unanimous. Bertram Cates is found guilty as charged!"

The lawyer for the religious supporters Gregory Dolls. Gregory has a great background, but he can't believe this case.

"Unless the state of mind of the members of the jury conforms to the laws and patterns of society."

The lawyer for the Darwinism Supporters Adam Joseph

"For Reverend Brown's product. Why don't you announce that there will be an evolutionist meeting."

Anna Joe is one of the supporters for having the children believe in god and how he created man.

"You don't care anything about Bert! You just want a chance to make speeches against the Bible!"

This entire conflict is over the teaching of Darwinism to students in a school room setting.

The court case goes on with a nasty tone and unorthodox proceeding.

How did the theory of Darwin differ from the way religion wanted the creation of man to be presented?
